After school, high school students usually go to their jobs, clubs or just call it a day and relax at home but for Joshua Contreras, Diego Earwood and Roxanne Watson, It’s editing. All of them make different types of video edits, but the one thing they all have in common is that they do it for the fun of it, the endless content they can create because of how easy it is for them to come up with ideas and make something unique.
We start off with Roxanne Watson, a Andrew P .Hill high school student who used to make funny vlogs on YouTube. She edited for a few years, but stopped because she had no free time to work on her videos and also because YouTube took it down, but before she quit her “dream job” she said that when she was younger, she always wanted to make funny vlogs when big YouTubers like Emma Chambertain and other channels like hers started popping off.
Roxanne started her YouTube channel when she was 13, although she didn’t have a lot of followers, she still uploaded weekly anyways, she said because of how care free the site was back then it was easy to make videos and post whatever, it wasn’t like today when you got copyright after copyright just because you used a one second clip or a song in your video.
fast forward a few years and Roxanne gets a two strikes on her YouTube channel, she knew if she got one more strike her channel would of get taken down, so she said “ It was too much for me at the time so I was just going to take a break and come back to fix it…...well that’s what I thought” sadly she never went back, she just got too catch up with life that she didn’t care if her channel stay up. One day at school she tried to search up her account, it wasn’t there anymore, till this day she doesn’t know how it went down but you can’t find her channel anymore, her last words “ It’s was going to go down sooner or later”
Same went for Diego Earwood but instead of getting his channel taken down,he gave up on it. Diego, a YouTube editor who used to make gaming videos, had a love for video games but even more love for memes. Diego was a big fan of YouTube Memers,he loved how it always made him laugh and wanted to do the same, he wanted to make people's day a little bit better.
Diego made a lot of YouTube channels before he finally stuck with one. March 19,2016 is the channel that changed everything for him. “My first ever video was a shooter game that I recorded on my phone, from there I made many different videos, I didn’t really get many views, it was always 7-58 views but I made videos anyways because it was so much fun”.
One day Diego was playing GTA 5 and driving around in his car when he thought to himself “this almost looks like a YouTubers car, and I could customize it so it could look like 100%.” Diego went to work on the video, upload it to YouTube and did not really think much of it, overnight just like that 6.9k views, I was shocked he said Diego saw all the views and started to pump out more and more videos, some videos getting 7-700 views,
until one day Diego was on twitter and a YouTubers ex girlfriend got hacked, The hacker started leaking DM’s about the break up and this and that, mind you his ex didn’t have many follower twitter so not many people could see this leaked stuff,Right way Diego went to work on this video, and just like that he made 27k views on just that video he later made more since the hacker leaked more stuff, 14k on one video 1.3k views on another.
Diego felt so overwhelmed but yet so happy this is what he always wanted. A year past and he was still making good view for a channel who only had 68 subscribers but as the views went down his motivation did as well until one day he stopped uploading,he said :”I was putting a lot of work in my videos and I just felt that nobody was watching, that nobody cared, so I stopped I couldn’t keep wasting my time but not just that but YouTube overall wasn’t doing so good after PewdiePie the king of YouTube sipped up, the site wasn’t the same…..I-I...just gave up on my dream because nobody cared.” To this day the channel is still up but he doesn’t want to give the name of it, he said if you don’t know it that’s cool but if you do, then don’t be giving it out, you are the only one who will have it and you will know wassup.
Not all editors giving up or because of something else, some just get burn out, like
Joshua Contreras, a local student at Yerba Buena High School, first fell in love with editing when he saw other people make funny/meme videos of random things on Instagram and YouTube.
It all started after Joshua felt his creativity tingle within him after having a song stuck in his head.
”It started because of a girl and YouTube....but that’s the long story, I’ll tell you the short answer, I had this song stuck in my head from a meme that I saw online, and my creativity kicked in, I wanted to make something cool out of the song, and so I did. Long story short I was crying and went to the car and started working on my edit, as I did that I felt the joy in making it and soon made more!” said Joshua.
But his creativity doesn’t just rage in his work it is also showcased in his own name “Little_Nasty99.”
“Funny story,” he said, “I was watching a YouTuber using pickup lines on girls, lol I know simp. As I was watching the video he said something like you should follow my Instagram @Little_Nasty99 and the girl just started Laughing because it was such a bad name, and soon after I went to IG to see if it was taken and lucky no one took it, so I did.” I saw Josh edits before and I know for a fact that some of his videos blow up so I decided to ask him how it started.
“Ah well you see, I saw this pretty girl making a tik tok meme video on IG and I went to her page because I had nothing else to make a edit out and I thought to myself she’s super cute no cap, Imma make a fast little edit, and so I did but mind me that this was the first fan edit I made so it came out super bad but I didn’t care because I knew she wasn’t going to see it, but boy I was wrong, she liked it and replied with pink hearts.
Joah was mad that it came out super bad and that she liked it. He later made a better one to make up from the last one and hit the nail on the head because she saw it again and replied with three big red hearts.
Joah explained how a lot of influencers liked his edits. You should check it out on my IG he said. “I just got to thank belle delphine for being the biggest meme of 2018 because without her my videos would of never reach those views”
And just like that Joahua took off with his account, making a hand full of edits until one day he was burned out. He didn’t see them as a hobby anymore but more as work to his life, he didn’t enjoy it anymore, Joahua was out of juice and his account started to free fall, joshua stopped making edits and almost quit it all but didn’t, he told he still loved it and saw something in it, he didn’t want to leave it behind because that was his only way to express himself and people were counting on him. Finally, after a 6+ week break, I asked Joshua to make an edit for us, and so he did and went back to his break lol.
Most of these Editors work themself to the max and some just quit because of change that they couldn’t control, but one thing for sure is that they all saw something in it and didn’t give up until they had too. If you're an editor take a walk, hang out with family, go treat yourself just don’t get too invested because it can really suck up.”I will always remember the good times I used to have...but for now…. we will move for the even better times” -Roxanne Watson
