Cars are a necessity for people. Cars help us get to our destination but what we might not always think about is that cars damage our environment. Aside from already having bad air quality, cars release nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide. It’s not healthy for us to breathe. Especially for youth. I think that people know how damaging it all is, they just don’t wanna put in the effort to really change it for the better of the future.
Another issue we have with our environment and cars is climate change. The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, made a plan to ban the production of gas cars in 2035. The governor plans on letting car companies only produce and sell electric cars. He had stated that this plan will help improve our air quality and climate change.
Rafael Dominguez, a resident of San Jose was asked to question, “Do you feel like electric cars will improve our air quality? And why?” Dominguez says, “ Yes I do feel like it will improve the air quality because the electric cars won’t run on gas anymore so there will be less pollution.”
Ngoc Hoang, a science teacher at Yerba Buena High School was asked the question, “Do you think that electric cars will help improve climate change? And why?” Hoang's response was, “I do think so because as I understand, the electric cars reduce the reliance on gas. We’re not directly burning gas and releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. And we understand that CO2 is what drives climate change. Causes the Earth to be warm and that changes patterns in the earth.”
Both interviewees gave a similar response. It shows that there are still people who are aware of what’s going on with our environment. They want to see a positive change. The main reason why governor Gavin Newsom made the plan was because of climate change.
The article published from The Economist, by Economist Intelligence Unit N.A. Incorporated, titled Marching bans; Free exchange states that the electric cars will be effective and efficient on cutting carbon. They also say that the cars will help with climate change.
We as people need to take a big step. If we keep doing nothing to improve and better our environment, then the next few generations won’t have long on our planet and our home. We need to stop ignoring this issue. The governor of California is doing what he feels like is right for our environment.
