When Priscilla Rodriguez, a 17 yr old Yerba Buena High School senior, was 6 years old she was going to a birthday party. What should have been a fun birthday party ended up being a tragic day for Priscilla because she got her leg broken in a birthday jumper.
A kid did a front flip and hit his head on her knee which led to it breaking.
This story takes place in San Jose California in 2008 when she was only 6 years old. She wanted to go to the jumper to go and jump. As kids were doing front flips one of them hit her knee which made it break. She had to wear a cast for 6-7 months due to it.
She said “It affects me because at times i don’t like how my legs look , my right knee looks different than my left knee and i get told that a lot that i walk crooked and it bothers me when people say that sometimes i wish i has normal legs but it’s just gonna stay with me so imma have to deal with that. At times there’s days where I feel insecure about my legs. And it affects me cuz at times I wear baggy jeans to hide my knee, it’s the insecurities.”
Priscilla said she was sad not being able to do things: “It was a struggle because when I would go to school I wasn’t able to play with my friends and I remember being really sad about it and also I wasn’t able tohave fun and it was just a big struggle because medications got to me hard and I wasn’t handling them it would give me bad side effects.”
She said she got proper treatment as a kid and what's good is that she didn't really get bullied when she was on the wheel chair.
Her leg has been improving little by little. It doesn't look as bad as it did before.
She was able to grow because now she is more careful on what she does. She is not as insecure as before since she tells herself that it will get better.
It is important because Priscilla’s story shows that we all have a struggle to deal with some may be similar while others may be different but we all have something to go through.
