On average, the United States has the highest rates of school fights in the world. The causes behind these fights could be drama that started between groups or people, relationships, or bullies.
This action has been happening for some time. School fights have been the cause of a lot of incidents that go out on public news and it worries the student’s parents that they are not there for their child in school.
According to “abcnews.go.com'', on September 25, 2019 police stated, “a 13-year-old student who was in critical condition after a school fight with two other students has been declared brain dead, according to the police on Wednesday”. This article provides evidence to the possible severity of school fights. When students get into a fight, there’s always a high chance that someone will get injured or worse.
School fights occur mostly in public high schools and not at elementary or middle schools. Usually, elementary and middle school fights are about toys, drama, or relationships. However, for high school fights, it’s very different. High school fights can be very dangerous and more complicated than elementary and middle school fights. They can lead to suicide, broken bones, or even a coma. Students' parents have expressed worry and fear that their children will somehow be involved in one of these fights and endanger their health.
For example, “21 students, all of them female, at Niagara Falls High school were suspended after 4 fights broke out Thursday, September 30, 2021. One student was injured and the other one was arrested. About 200 students were signed out of school by their parents Friday, September 31, 2021”. After the incident, a rumor spread that there was going to be more violence at the school. This rumor caused a lot of worry from the teachers, students and parents. This shows how much high school fights can really affect students and the community overall.
School fights don't always involve students. They can also involve teachers as well. According to “abc7news.com”, a Texas substitute teacher was fired after a video was released showing them fighting with a student. Days after the incident, the student's lawyer informed KVUE's Bryce Newberry that the student had spent the weekend in a dark room with brain damage of some sort. The reasoning for this fight was because the student was talking back to the teacher. After being pulled down to the ground by the teacher, the student received brain damage from the teacher consistently stomping on her head.
Certain students treat school fights as if they are just a sport. For instance, they think that school fights are like MMA or even boxing but it's not. Boxing and MMA are sports because they are a competition between one person and another, that’s what makes a sport a sport. However, school fights are not considered a sport because they only happen between students that create drama. Drama not only may lead to fights, but also murders or shootings.
In most cases, school fights can be prevented by stopping the fight before it starts, not getting physically involved, dispersing the crowd, controlling the students emotions by making a speech about maturity, or being responsible. These methods may help, but it is not guaranteed to prevent school fights every time.
The superintendent from the East Side District, Glenn Vander Zee said, “In most cases students go through difficult times where they feel angry, upset, or jealous towards someone or something and they bring that feeling in their heart, making them have the urge to be violent towards others”. This is what he believes is what causes school fights to happen in schools.
In my opinion, I believe that in order to stop school fights from happening staff members should patrol the school campus. I believe staff members should patrol the school campus because they can most likely stop a fight before it’s about to happen. Another reason is this method can also help students that are in need of help if they are stuck in a situation involving fighting.
