Music has always been important to me and is something I always rely on no matter how I am feeling. Some songs have connected me to certain memories and things that have managed to put a smile on my face.
One of the earliest memories that I can recall is how I would do karaoke during parties. My siblings and I would often sing in front of large crowds and sometimes received money for it.
We would often choose songs from artists such as Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Boyz II Men. When we would sing we would always try to hit the high notes which is something that would constantly fill us with laughter. Listening to songs from these artists now I get reminded of these memories and begin to miss them.
Currently, music has been really helpful through stressful things. Sometimes I become really overwhelmed with homework and feel discouraged to start. I often get a lot of anxiety and start to panic.
However, listening to music has helped me calm down and has given me the motivation to finish things. It as well helped me express my emotions which I often tend to hide from others due to embarrassment.
R&B has helped me feel more relaxed and an artist that my siblings and I often listen to is Summer Walker. Whenever I listen to her music I get reminded of the time my sister and I would decorate for Christmas early.
Recently, a song that I have enjoyed from this artist is “Session 33”. The lyrics of this song make me feel uplifted because it tells a story about overcoming a struggle which is something that I can somewhat relate to.
A line in this song that really draws my attention is “…’Cause a house is not a home when no one’s there...”
Music has felt like a home to me. A home that has sheltered me from all my problems, has given me warmth, and has comforted me.
