Many high schoolers aren’t quite sure of what they want to do after graduating. Some aren’t sure if they want to go to college, work, or do a gap year. My sister, Angie Gonzalez, was one of those students who wasn’t sure what to do after finishing high school.

When Angie got out of high school she really didn’t know what she wanted to do, she hadn’t found her passion yet. She just knew that school wasn’t for her. After graduating she did try to go to the evergreen community college. Even though she only went for her passion for soccer still she only went for three months. Not even a full semester.

Angie: “I kinda knew that same year that I had graduated since I was class of COVID I wasn’t in school physically and I started working and once I started working I realized how expensive it is to take care of your bills and finances and I know I never really had a career set in mind that involved going to a four year or community so I would say that same year that I graduated I realized.”

Angie was really unsure of what she wanted to do and she went from job to job including Home Depot, Starbucks, babysitting, and among some other jobs. Then she started playing around with new stuff like cutting hair and dying it.

She then started to realize that being a stylist was something she liked and was passionate about it. Angie realized it was something she felt way more close to than all the other jobs she had prior.

Angie: “Overall each of my clients i meet are different and they bring something different to the table i guess it would just be maybe like when I started becoming satisfied with my work it would make me happy also knowing that the client herself was happy with her outcome.”

She started saving up all the money she was earning and got a loan from some family and friends to be able to go into cosmetology school. Angie then realized that it was going to be hard and there were going to be some stressful times and some times where she just didn’t want to go anymore. But with some support and not giving she was able to go through cosmetology school.

Angie: “I would say during Beauty school because there were a lot of times when I just wanted to stop going and it was stressful because it’s something that you have to learn day by day. It doesn't come to you naturally to do hair or overall like anything in school you kinda have to learn day by day and take it as it comes.”

As of yesterday my sister got her cosmetology license so she hopes to just keep going forward from now on and be able to profit off doing hair. She hopes to be able to go as far as she can whether it’s renting out a studio or switching it up to being able to do brides and bridesmaids hair in the future.

Even though sometimes she had made mistakes with some support and some more learning she has been able to grow more and more everyday.
