When Angie Cosio was younger she never really liked to dance. Growing up Mexican, dancing has always been a big thing in Mexican culture so growing up in a Mexican household her mom would always try to teach her how to dance but she hated dancing so she never really learned.
When she was in 8th grade her teacher announced that they were going to do a Cinco De Mayo festival and that they needed girls to dance. Her friends wanted to join but Cosio did not. Her friends kept bugging her and asking her to join and Cosio was like “oh hell no I am not going to join” but Cosio friends kept asking her so she finally gave in.
Cosio ended up enjoying it and having lots of fun. She liked Folklorico so much that she decided to join Freshman year of high school which was a little different because it was during covid.

“Folklorico has helped me find passion in dance and has been my way of releasing stress when I have a lot going on,” Cosio explained. Junior year of high school Cosio had a lot of stress and when she was in Folklorico she was teaching girls Folklorico but she wasn’t learning herself and it just added more to her stress.
In January Cosio decided to register for classes with a local Folklorico dance company called Los Laureles. “It’s one of my best decisions I’ve made, it disciplined me and I look forward to my classes on Wednesday.” She explained that it’s one of her best decisions and looked forward to going to the class on Wednesdays.
During this period of time she was very stressed and she was going through a lot. She had recently broken up with her boyfriend and ended a few friendships following the break up. It was really difficult and stressful but Folklorico allowed her to really destress and take her mind off the things that were making her anxious.
She has a lot more confidence in her skills now that she has been going to her classes for Folklorico. “I’ve been going for almost a year, and every time something new comes up I look forward to going to class to get it off my mind since my classes are only an hour and they’re so fast paced that I don’t have the time to think about anything else other than dancing, and that’s what I like about it” Cosio said.
She has been doing Folklorico her entire time here in Yerba Buena High school and she wants to continue doing Folklorico at a college that has a good Folklorico club .
