Numerous times, we, scholars, are told by our parents to graduate high school.
Thalia Nguyen, a freshman at Yerba Buena High School, hopes to not only graduate high school, but to also make her parents proud of her by achieving straight A’s throughout her whole high school experience.
Just starting Nguyen’s freshman year, she participates in eight classes, including one AP class, the speech and debate club, volunteering clubs, etc. like a breeze she strives to continue high school smoothly and successfully.
Nguyen: “Some of my teachers are… kind of put all the work on the students like APHUG (Advanced Placement Human Geography).”
Nguyen struggles to cooperate with her teacher's style of teaching due to different reasons such as: teachers not explaining the lesson thoroughly, rushing through the lectures, and not providing enough time to complete assignments. Although cooperation is a problem, Nguyen learns to self-teach herself when she doesn’t understand the concept.
Although Nguyen finds the school load may build up as you proceed further and eventually can be a lot to handle, Nguyen finds the most importance in how you maintain your work. The very few ways she uses has helped her so far through her freshman year and will continue throughout her high school adventure.
Nguyen: “I think staying on track of your work is most important. Managing my time and not procrastinating. (Why?) Because you gotta keep your good grades and if you fall behind it’s hard to catch back up.
Besides keeping her grades up, Nguyen loves to interact with her friends to keep her smile up and to keep herself occupied at boring times. Finding activities such as: volunteering for clubs, shopping with her mom, hanging out at her friends houses are few of the many things Nguyen does with her freetime for fun.
Nguyen: “I aim to meet new people and surround myself with different perspectives.”
Although Nguyen isn’t fond of the load of work her teachers provide, her motivations to continue are her parents. She wishes to give a message to her parents that their hard work paid off when coming to the U.S. (United States) as immigrants.
Nguyen: “I want to make my parents proud of me because they work hard for me to succeed.”
Not knowing the reality of high school can be scary as someone who is just starting, but Nguyen began her journey in a flash without any fears, but excitement.
