Dropping the mic with confidence but never letting his goals go down the same way, this is a story about 16-year old Junior, Johnny Nyugen, also known as Lil JD. He does not only have dreams of becoming an artist but he also has struggles he'd like to share.
Nguyen's life was never the way he wanted it to be. Growing up without a father in the picture, Nguyen had to learn how to be independent, slowly overcoming this.
Lil JD: “Not having a father in the picture it's alright, it's not that bad… It hurts, it hurts a lot. Now you kind of realize you're much older and you don't need a father in your life.
Having only a sister who doesn't live with him anymore made him feel even more alone, not feeling the support he desired. His mom, on the other hand, is supportive but does not like the idea of Nguyen becoming an artist.
Lil JD: “My mom doesn't want me to go into this career because she thinks when you get too famous people fall through depression and take drugs”
Also going through hard times with his mental health, this builds on his obstacles making it nearly impossible for Nguyen to overcome them. Appearing that these dilemmas stand in his way, he won’t let those aching and frustrating days get the best of him.
Lil JD: “I feel great, when you're sad and going through stuff and you just play that type of music and you just listen to it. They're going through the same thing as I am.”
Putting all of this aside, Nguyen refuses this to be the reason his goals fall apart. He still has high hopes for becoming an artist. At the end, he does live up to one quote that keeps him going.
Lil JD:“Never back down, never give up.”
Everytime Nguyen performs in front of the school, it makes him feel good about himself. It gives him a burst of motivation. He's been performing for three years and doesn't plan on stopping.
Being inspired by artists like Daniel Caesar, Giveon, and Eslabon Armado. Nguyen feels like he can relate to each of these artists because he hears himself in these songs. He feels a connection.
With Nguyen being in high school, the last step is to graduate and continue making music from there. With plans on being bigger than people thought he'd ever be. Obstacles make your goals harder to reach, not impossible.
