Barbering has become really popular over the years, especially with teenagers. Now it’s almost guaranteed there is at least one barber at your school. You probably even seen someone cutting hair in a bathroom, garage, or at their house. A lot of high school students start cutting hair so they can make some money, but also just because it's fun and something new to try.
But for Charly, cutting hair started the same way, just trying something new.
Charly is a Hispanic highschool student who started cutting hair from his house. At first it was just something he wanted to try, but over time it became something he really liked doing.
Charly: I wanted to try something new bruh
Like many young barbers today, Charly got inspired by watching other barbers online.
Charly: My inspiration was other barbers that i saw on social media
Watching videos of different haircuts made him interested in learning the skill himself. After seeing what other people could do with clippers, he decided to pick some up and start practicing, the first person who trusted him with a cut was his brother.
Charly: My brother was the first one to let me cut his hair
Starting wasn’t perfect, like most beginners, it took practice and patience to get better. But instead of giving up, he kept going and started learning more about different types of haircuts.
Charly is also going to barber college where he is learning more about cutting hair.
Charly: It’s going good i’m learning um a lot about different type of haircuts.
Even though he is still learning, he already has a favorite style to cut
Charly: My favorite haircut to do its probably like a taper
For students who might want to start cutting hair too, Charly says the biggest thing is just to keep practicing and not rush the process.
Charly: I would say practice as much as you can and be patient
Stories like Charly’s show that sometimes trying something new can turn into a real skill. What started as just curiosity and watching videos online turned into something he enjoys doing and is continuing to learn more about.
