Basketball has been the best part of my high school experience that has allowed me to be more confident. It has made me realize that sometimes I have to push myself so that I can accomplish my goals and to not give up no matter how hard it gets. Basketball hasn't been just a sport or activity to do but it has also been a life lesson that I will cherish.
Before joining basketball, I would give up easily on my goals like working out or just simply doing homework. But now this sport has pushed me to believe in myself. This led me to go to the gym more and I ended up reaching my goal of losing 35 pounds.
Coming into my first year of basketball season I didn't know anything about playing basketball. I remember how I was too scared to try out but I stepped out of my comfort zone to try something that was new and exciting.
During games I would be too scared to have the ball and to even be aggressive with someone so I never made any points during my first year of basketball. Over time I practiced shooting the ball and am getting better and I'm not afraid to be aggressive and not scared of getting hit by people.
Now that I am used to working out and doing sports it feels weird to just lay around and do nothing all day. I don't like not doing anything. I like to keep myself moving around because if I don't I feel useless.
It wasn't just the sport itself that led me to be confident but it was the coaches who were role models to me. They always made sure that I finished the hard drills that I struggled to do and were there to check if I wasn't just putting in half my effort but all of my effort. The coaches always made it clear that they want what's best for players and they want us to succeed. They would give us pointers on things that they think will help with our shooting or defending and it did help. Even on our bad days the coaches would still be proud that we tried our best and would encourage us to try to do more the next day of practice.
