When you think of a person who you trust and appreciate in your school, who do you think of ?
For me it’s Shasiem Cavazo a school monitor at Yerba Buena High School, Cavazo mentions she always wanted to work with kids since she was in high school, she wanted to be in the police department with juveniles or as a probation officer but unfortunately she didn't make it that far.
Cavazo:When I was in high school I wanted to work with the police department , I wanted to work with juveniles or as a probation officer , unfortunately i didnt make it that far but yes I always wanted to work with kids.
Cavazo, a 47 year-old single mother of one child, has been at Yerba Buena for three years and says it wasn't really a choice to work at Yerba Buena because she kept applying for different jobs and different positions but she is glad it was Yerba Buena where she ended up.
Cavazo's experience at Yerba Buena has had some good and bad moments with students sometimes not wanting to go to class. She says it has been hard not to take things personally and she had to learn that the kids are young and learn how to work with them.
Cavazo: “My experience has had some good and bad moments. It is hard to learn not to take things personally and I had to remember that the kids are young and sometimes we have to learn to work with them.”
Despite the bad moments she has had at YB Cavazo always has a smile on her face and she enjoys getting to know the students, helping them in ways that she can but she mostly enjoys getting to know the kids and their stories that they've been through and protecting them.
For me Cavazo has always been there in ways that she can . I’ve known Cavazo since my freshman year and it all started telling each other what we liked and sharing hobbies like going to car shows, Music and sometimes even seeing her at the car shows in San Jose.
Cavazo: "My favorite part is the kids enjoying getting to know them, helping them in ways that i can, getting them to class , but over everything is getting to know the kids and their stories and protecting them."
But most importantly how she has been there for me emotionally like when I have arguments with family and I need opinions on what I should do, or when I get in trouble she makes sure to hear me and not judge me. Instead she encourages me to do better and ways that I can improve which is mostly what she does with all the girls.
She also always makes sure we are okay and if she sees that we are not okay she asks us how we are doing. Lastly is how she makes sure no one is alone or feels lonely like when she saw that I was alone she encouraged me to make friends.
All these things have made me and all of us trust and appreciate her for all she does in this school to encourage everybody to be better everyday and try our best in everything not just in school but also outside of school.
Cavazo is not just the school monitor here at Yerba Buena but she is also a good role for all of us she always reminding us how important it is for us to do good because it's the best thing for us and how it will all pay off later, she is always looking out for all the students and making sure we all get what we need, she also shared an advice that i think all of the youth should hear.
Cavazo: “Something important is that kids need to find themselves and they need to be true to themselves and they need to be leaders. Sometimes it could be difficult to stand up for what's right but in the long run it's the best thing and it will change your life.”

I'm grateful to have someone like Cavazo at YB who I can trust and feel comfortable with. She helps me everyday and encourages me to be my better self and ways that I can grow to be a better student, and daughter,She is also there for me when im shy to meet new people, like the time when i was going to join a club but was too shy to go so she went with me and introduced me to them and made sure i felt comfortable with them.
She hasn't just helped me but also all of those students that go to her when they have problems and this makes her more than just a school monitor. It makes her a special person that all of the students are gonna have and remember her in their hearts forever.
