Vincent Hang remembers how hard his life was in the 1st grade, living in a tiny apartment that was so cramped with three siblings, he had to sleep on the floor, but now, he has a change of scenery, he finally has freedom and space in a new house.
Hang, a freshman at Yerba Buena High School, was born in San Jose and used to live in a tiny apartment with his mom, his two brothers and his sister in a tiny apartment that was filled with cockroaches and rats that were infested in the kitchen. Rats were behind the oven while the cockroaches were just lying on the floor.
So it was very hard for him to live in a tiny apartment, even mentioning that he had to sleep on the floor and also complaining about the noise from upstairs, and having issues about snoring.
“There was not much to like about. I mean, we’re sleeping right near each other basically.
The apartment was very small. I was sleeping on the ground while my mom was sleeping on the couch. And all my siblings had the side of me. And then the worst thing about it was since it was an apartment, there was someone above us that was hella loud. Even if they vacuum, it was so loud.”
Since being cramped in a room with his siblings sleeping on the ground and next to each other was annoying while also his father was sleeping in his office, his family had enough of the apartment and decided to move into a better house back in the second grade.
He finally has his own room where he could sleep alone and not be cramped in between his siblings, now getting more sleep and also able to do his own laundry. Even making a new friend that is close to him in the neighborhood.
His family also now has a backyard where he stored a few rabbits and chickens. Since he has a backyard, his family besides his sister and at times his brothers contributed to work and Hang’s uncle as well especially doing the heavy lifting for the garden, as well as his dad while his mom is doing the gardening for the majority of time and Hang is digging to grow new plants.
However, there were a few challenges that appeared in the neighborhood he was living in. During the first week of school when his father was driving in the neighborhood, a homeless man with a machete was right next to his friends house and he did not want to be out there especially since he was walking around his house and in the neighborhood.
“Man, I remember driving, this is like the 1st week we started school but sometimes a few times a few years there's the guy with my home machete, a homeless guy, I did not want to go out because there’s a whole guy. If you see a guy with a machete, I ain’t going out, bro. Especially he was walking around my house.”
Despite the challenge he faced, he is living a better life in the new house he is a part of with his family instead of a tiny apartment that he could barely sleep in.
